For ease of understanding in this faq, you are guilded and your pet's name is Fido. If you are not guilded, names will be treated as blue instead of the green I have shown.
If you are guilded or not, your pet will normally appear blue. Only if you are guilded will you be able to tell if your pet is flagged as being controlled by you. When you give your pet a guard or attack command and are guilded, then your pet will appear green. When your pet is flagged as being controlled by you, you can freely attack it like you would a guildmate without becoming a criminal. Your pet can also attack you freely.
You and Fido are out hunting monsters. Fido turns blue because he looses his control flag and kills a monster. The corpse is now blue, since you do not have looting rights because Fido killed it. If Fido had remained green with the control flag, then you would have looting rights on the monster's corpse. Unless Fido has the control flag set to you, you will also be ineligible for fame and karma received from killing the monster
When a pet has control set to you, you are responsible for it's actions for 2 minutes. If it is a white wyrm and hits an innocent with mass curse, you will become a criminal. If you release your pet during your 2 minute control timer flag, you are still responsible for it's actions until the timer wears off.
Joe approaches you as an innocent. Joe attacks you. Joe is now a criminal to everyone, including Fido, but an aggressor to you. If you die, you can report Joe for murder.
Joe approaches you as an innocent. You command Fido to attack Joe. Both you and Fido are now aggressors to Joe. If Joe dies, you will receive a murder count.
Pete is in a rival guild. His pet is Spot. Spot can attack you with no penalty, just as Fido can attack Pete with no penalty. However, there is a bug that causes Pete and Spot to turn into criminals if Spot is commanded to attack Fido. You and Fido will also become criminals if you command Fido to attack Spot.
Joe is a criminal. You command Fido to attack Joe. Fido is now an aggressor to Joe, but innocent to everyone else. Two minutes after Joe's last criminal act, he becomes innocent to everyone, but lawfully damaged to Fido.
