Certain types of pets can make use of "pack instinct". When combined with other creatures who share the same type of pack instinct, they can increase their damage by a percentage. All of the pets within the pack must be targeting the same monster to receive the pack bonus (ie. if only 3 of your 5 pack members are attacking the same target, then you will only receive 50% damage bonus for each of the 3 that are on the same target, not 100% for all 5).

A panther and a cougar both belong to a "feline" pack instinct and can be used together to receive the pack bonus. A panther and a timber wolf both can use pack instinct, but they cannot be used together to receive the pack bonus since one is feline and the other is canine.
